Originally built where the River Foss meets the River Ouse the remains have been unearthed of the original fortress and walls. The Romans named it Eboracum, the Anglo Saxons named it Eoforwic and the vikings after them called it Jorvik, gradually becoming the name York.

The city has alot to offer with attractions and things to do, both modern and historic. Being an ancient town visitors have many places to go to find out about its heritage. A few of these are Yorkshire Museum, York Dungeon, York Minster, National Railway Museum, York Castle Museum, Cliffords Tower and Yorvik Viking Centre. There are guided walks, open top buses and boat trips available which are excellent ways to see the sights of York city or the countryside.
