Overview of Windsor
Famous as the site of Windsor castle and the residency of successive generations of the British Royal Family. Windsor is situated 12 miles west of Heathrow airport. This journey normally takes 30 minutes. It links to Eton and Slough via the M4 motorway, going as far as Bristol in the West. It is also in close proximity to the M40, linking to Warwick and Birmingham in the North.
Windsor was mentioned in the doomsday book. This site is now OLD Windsor and is located 3 miles south of the NEW Windsor site. This was created when the first Windsor Castle was built of wattle and daub in about 1100. The Town grew prosperous from its close associations to the Crown and it encouraged many trades people such as goldsmiths, vintners, spicers and mercer to the town from London. Although 30% of the population was killed in the plague known as the "Black Death" of 1348, Windsor survived due to royal investments. Soon people from all over the world were journeying to Winsdor to serve the royal family.In the 15th century Winsor became a major pilgrimage site. This is due to a supposed piece of the True Cross being buried in St George's Chapel.Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor is set in Windsor. Windsor was the home of the New Model Army and the castle was garrisoned there during the English Civil War. Today, Windsor's main industry is centered round tourism and attracts visitors from all over the world!
