Overview of Stockport

Stockport is a large town in Greater Manchester, England. It is sited on the ground of the River Mersey. Stockport is 196 miles north of Heathrow Airport and will take approximately 3 and a half hours to travel there in normal traffic conditions. You can travel from Stockport to Manchester Airport via two motor ways the M40 and the M6.

Stockport was originally recorded as Stokeport in 1170 and was also once part of Cheshire. It has a population of 136,082 according to the census taken in 2001.

Stockport s growth rapidly expanded during the industrial revolution. This was aided by the swift growth in cotton manufacturers. Industry has played a significant role in the town's history. In the 16th century Stockport was known for the farming of hemp and rope and in the 18th century ran one of the first mechanized silk factories in the UK.

Stockport is well-known for its production of hats. At 'Hat Works - the Museum of Hatting' visitors can learn all about this trade. The museum has over 20 restored Victorian hat making machines from previous hat factories and also has demonstrations of hat making on the original machinery.
