St Helens

St Helens is located 26 miles to the west of Manchester airport, and normally takes about 45 minutes by car. Historically, St Helens was part of Lancashire, but later became amalgamated into Mersyside. Its latest population count in 2001, stood at 176,843 individuals. In the last census 87% of the population noted that they were Christian, making St Helens the "most Christian town in Britain." It is built on mainly arable and boggy ground, and has many parks.

St Helens first appeared in the Doomsday book under the refernce "Hundred of Newton." It blossomed during the Industrial Revolution, where it became a center for industry and innovation. Its exports included Coal, copper and Chemicals, but is most famous for glass. Once the center for UK glass production, today only Pilkington glass now makes commercial products in St Helens. However, this proud heritage is still remembered in the World of Glass Museam, which gives daily glass blowing shows, it is situated minutes fron M62 junction 7 by car, or 5 minutes walk from St helens central station.

St Helens was the site of many innovations, we take for granted today. The first canal was constructed here in 1751, called the "sankey navigation." In 1829 the famous Rainhill Locomotive Trials were held here, This was won by Stevenson's "Rocket", and the first UK railway line from manchester to Liverpool was created in 1830.
