Situated on the Firth of Forth, South Queensferry is 10 miles north west of Edinburgh City. It was once a royal borough and owes much of its prosperity to the passing trade over the original Forth Ferries and later the bridges. The New Forth Road Bridge was opened in 1964, and is still the main transit route for people and goods from Scotland's capital to the north.
Local attractions include the annual Ferry Festival, which takes place in August. It includes the unique "procession of the Burry Man," where one local man is covered from head to toe in Sticky Burrs and walks through the town collecting money for charity. He is supported by two minders and fortified with whisky throughout the long days procession. There is also the Looney Dook festival, where members of the public jump into the Firth of Forth on New Years Day.
