Overview of Ringwood

The town of Ringwood is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 104 miles that would take around 1 hour 46 minutes by taxi via the M25, M3 and A31. It is situated in Hampshire on the River Avon and has a population of 12,567 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Anglo-Saxon times and the name is thought to derive from its position to the New Forest or on the border of Hampshire and it was documented to have been called Rimucwude in 955 AD which translates into the Rim of the Forest. In the early times the town was dependant on the River Avon for its mills and the Forest for fuel for industry. The towns claim to fame happened in 1685 when the Duke of Monmouth was imprisoned in the house in West Street after his capture in Horton, a result of his defeat at the Battle of Sedgemoor. Ringwood was also famous for its beer making, using the excellent water of the River Avon and in 1847 the opening of the Railway put the town on the map due to it being on the line from London to Dorchester.

There are many things to do in and around the town and in the surrounding Dorset countryside. Some attractions include Moors Valley Railway, Oakdene Forest Park, Avon Heath Country Park and the New Forest.
