Overview of Portsmouth

The city of Portsmouth is located South West of Gatwick airport a distance of 56 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the A24 and A27. Portsmouth is found on the island of Portsea, where the solent joins the English Channel. It is the second most densely populated place in the UK, after Inner London.

Portsmouth is the historical center for ship building and dock yards in the UK. It has the oldest dry docks in the UK, and is home to the Mary Rose and HMS Victory. At the height of ship building in the UK, Portsmouth was the largest dock yards in the world. Today it still manufactures and repairs ships for the Royal Navy. Portsmouth has many old forts, castles and fortifications, today these are tourist attractions but historically they were to protect Portsmouth from the French who conducted many raiding parties. Portsmouth was also sacked many times by French invaders. Paradoxically, during the Second World War, Portsmouth was used as the base for the D-Day landings

Tourism is very important to Portsmouth, and there are many museums and attractions based around its proud naval heritage. Some of the most interesting places to visit are: Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays, the tower is 552ft high and there are several viewing galleries,the birthplace of Charles Dickens, the Blue Reef Aquarium, Cumberland House (a natural history museum), The Royal Marines Museum, Southsea Castle and Genesis Expo, the UK's first, and only creationist museum.

Portsmouth is linked to the Isle of Wight by ferry, as well as various ports in France and Spain. There are also excellent rail and road services to link Portsmouth to the Capital and to the north and west country.
