Overview of Aberdeen

The town of Aberdeen is located North-East of Manchester Airport at a distance of 362 miles. This would take around 6.5 hours by taxi via the M6 and M74, M8 and M90. Aberdeen is a city in the Highlands of North East Scotland in the North of England. The city began as two seperate Burghs Old Aberdeen and New Aberdeen each situated on the two local rivers of the Dee and Don, gradually the two merged into the incorporated city it is known as today. Due to the architecture being made of locally quarried grey granite it is often called Granite City or the Silver City. The city is situated near a long sandy coastline of the North Sea marked with jagged cliffs with the city itself resting on a base of silt and sandstone. Features such as misty moors, tranquil lochs and the mountainous regions of the Cairngorms National Park make up the landscape that surround this historic city. It has a history as a coastal town with its seafaring, ship building, paper making and whiskey production and in more recent times the oil industry that lead to the city's economic boom and for it to be called the Oil Capital of Europe

The city is characterised by its unique architecture and grey stone buildings the granite structures showing no sign of weathering and look brand new as can be seen of the Town House in Union Street and Marischal College. Stone that had been quarried at Rubislaw Quarry was used to build the Houses of Parliament and Waterloo Bridge in London. The city has a cathedral called St Machar's and two universities the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University.

According to the census taken in 2010 the population of Aberdeen is about 217,100 residents. It is Scotlands 3rd most populous city and was given Royal Burgh status by King David in the 12th Century.

The city hosts the Aberdeen International Youth Festival regarded as a major international event attracting thousands of visitors. Other Cultural and artistic places to visit would be The Aberdeen Art Gallery with works of art displayed by Monet, Pisarro and Renoir, His Majesty's Theatre with all of its theatrical and musical events and The Music Hall.

Outside of the city you can enjoy the countryside of Royal Deeside but inside the city are many wonderful parks such as Duthie Park 44 acres of winter gardens, tropical paradises and arid houses with wonderful varieties of plants and flowers that originate from all over the world. Whilst you will find Wylie Park 1 mile north of the city which compirises of 210 acres of wildlife exhibits and recreational activities to amuse adults and children alike.

The city falls within the area of Scotland that speaks the dialect called 'Doric' the language of the Lowland Scots celebrated every year at the annual Doric Festival. Trying authentic scottish food must be on the list of any enthusiastic tourist who may want to request dishes such as Mealie Puddings, Haggis, Lorne Square Sausages, breakfast Rowies and of course Scotch Broth.
