Overview of Leicester
At the heart of the Country, Leicester is well positioned with road links to all important commercial centers. The M1 and the M69 both connect to it, and there are excellent rail and bus links too. Leicester is situated 100 miles to the north of Heathrow airport, this journey normally takes 2 hours.
Leister has a population of 280,000, and is the largest city in the East Midlands and the tenth largest in the country. It has a thriving multi cultural back ground, including polish, Urdu, Somali and Punjabi speakers. It has a diverse mixture of industries from commercial to industrial.It was originally a Roman selttlement and was recorded in the Doomsday book.
Engineering is a major part of the Leicester industry, as is food and drink. Walkers crisps currently makes 10 million bags of crisps per day at two factories in Beaumont Leys, and is the UK's largest grocery brand.In May 2007 Leicester was voted 'Curry Capital of Britain 2007', and many Indian food manufacturers have their head quarters in the region.
Leicester railway station rubns services to Luton, Lincols, Sheffield, York and London. There is a fast rail link to London, and so it is very easy to get from Leister to anywhere including the continent! There is also St Margarets bus station to link Leicester to the north and south of England.
Leicester is also the '2008 European City of Sport'and boasts many well regarded clubs, such as; Leicester Tigers (rugby union),Leicester City F.C. (football), Leicester Riders (basketball), Leicester Coritanian A.C. (Athletics), and the Leicestershire County Cricket Club.
The council were very keen to keep green spaces in the area, and so Leicester has many parks to break up the urbanisation. These include;Abbey Park, Botanic Garden, Victoria Park, Gorse Hill City Farm, Castle Gardens, Grand Union Canal, River Soar, Watermead Country Park.
Famous Leicester people include; John Deacon (from Queen, Lady Jane Grey (Queen for 9 days, before being beheaded), Graham Chapman (One of the infamous Monty Python Team),David and Richard Attenbourgh, Engelbert Humperdinck (Singer),John Leeson (Bungle in Rainbow),Joseph Merrick ("The Elephant Man") and not forgetting the band know as Showaddywaddy!
