Overview of Thame

The town of Thame is located Northwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 40 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the M40. It is situated in Oxfordshire and has been named after the River Thame that flows past the North side of the town, it has a population of 11,072 according to the 2001 Census.

The Abbey of Thame was founded in 1138 and was a thriving religious centre until the Dissolution of the Monestaries in the 16th Century. The champion bare-knuckle boxer James Figg came from Thame who had his early prize fights at the local Greyhound Inn, and in the 18th Century methodist founder John Wesley preached in the town with the congregation being so large that they fell through the floor to the floor beneath. Famous residents of modern times were Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, violinist Alfredo Campoli and W.B. Yeats lived for a short period at Cuttle Brook House.

There are many attractions on offer in Thame, it stages the Oxfordshire County and Thame Show which is the largest one-day agricultural show in Britain and Thame Carnival in June which attracts many visitors with its flower festival and fete. Popular tourist attactions include Thame Players Theatre, Thame Circular Walks, Cuttle Brook Nature Reserve and the many walkways and views of the Chiltern Hills that are located to the South.
