Overview of Swansea
The town of Swansea is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 173 miles that would take around 3 hours by taxi via the M4 and over the Severn Bridge. It is situated in the historic county boundaries of Glamorgan on the South Wales Coast and has a population of 239,000 according to the 2011 Statistics.
The history of the area can be traced back to the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, and was also occupied by the Romans and the Vikings. The Port of Swansea traded in wines, wool, cloth and coal and during the Industrial Revolution was a site for Copper Smelting Works and was known as 'Copperopolis'. It was a target for bombing in World War II and much of the Medieval buildings were completely destroyed. Notable places in the city centre that exist today are the Castle Ruins, Marina, Swansea Museum and Swansea Market which is the largest covered market in the UK.
There are many places of interest in Swansea including The Grand Theatre, Oystermouth Castle, Singleton Park, The Brangwyn Hall and Swansea Bay. There are outdoor activities at Swansea Bay such as sailing, water skiing, surfing, walking and cycling. The seaside village of Mumbles is a popular place to visit with Victorian Pier, shops and restuarants.
