Overview of Stroud

The town of Stroud is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 94 miles that would take around 1 hour 50 minutes by taxi via the M4 and A419. It is situated in Gloucestershire and is the main town in the Stroud district. It has a population of 32,052 according to the 2001 Census. It is situated below the western escarpment of the Cotswolds Hills and the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty surrounds the town.

Signs of Strouds history can be found amongst the Neolithic long barrows at Uley, Sesley Common and Nympsfield, and also remains of the Roman era at Frocester. It is known for its involvement in the Industrial Revolution when it was a cloth town with woollen mills powered by the rivers of the five valleys, the wool obtained by the famous Cotswold sheep that would graze the hills in the area. The town was described as 'the Covent Garden of the Cotswolds' by Jasper Conran due to its artistic community, independant shops and cafe culture.

There are many things to do in Stroud, with attractions such as the Farmers Market, Giffords Circus and Woodchester Mansion. For outdoor persuits there are activites such as hot air ballooning, Boat Trips, Cycling and walking, the area has some beautiful valleys, vales and landscapes aswell as other villages and market towns to visit.
