Overview of Malmesbury

The town of Malmesbury is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 81 miles that would take around 1.5 hours by taxi via the M4. It is situated in the southern Cotswolds in the county of Wiltshire and has a population of 4,631 according to the 2001 Census.

Malmesbury has a long history having both Neolithic and Iron Age forts between 800 and 500 BC making it the oldest continually inhabited town in England and the oldest Borough in England created around 880 AD by Alfred the Great. It was known as a centre for learning and Malmesbury Abbey was founded in 675 by an Irishman named Maildubh and it was the site of the early attempt at human flight in 1010 when a monk called Eilmer of Malmesbury flew a primitive hang glider from the tower. It is home to the prodigious organisation called the Malmesbury Commoners, a continuation of the time when King Athelstan granted the men who helped him defeat an army of northerners and to thank them he granted them the status of freemen.

There are many things to do and places of interest in Malmesbury, it has over 400 listed buildings including the Tower House said to have been a place where King Henry VIII dined after hunting in Bradon Forest, The Old Bell Englands oldest Hotel and Bremilham Church the smallest Church in use in Britain. Situated in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty the region offers beautiful countryside, hillsides, river valleys, water meadows, Beech Woods, ancient villages and market towns.
