Overview of Lincoln

The town of Lincoln is located North of Heathrow Airport a distance f 153 miles that would take around 2 hours 45 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A1. It is situated in Lincolnshire and has a population of 85,595 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Iron Age and remains of round wooden dwellings were found dating back to the 1st Century BC. When the Romans came to Lincoln they built a legionary fortress high on a hill overlooking what is known today as Brayford Pool. In Viking times Lincoln was a trading centre that issued coins from its own Mint, and in 1068 after the Norman Conquest William I gave orders for Lincoln Castle to be built and the first Lincoln Cathedral was completed in 1092. The city prospered during the Industrial Revolution and excelled in heavy engineering.

There is plenty to see and do in Lincoln with many historic sites such as the old Quarter around Bailgate and down Steephill to the High Bridge where you will find half-timbered buildings and three ancient churches. Among the most popular visitor attractions are the Castle, Cathedral and the Medieval Bishops Palace and others include the Museum of Lincolnshire Life, the Sir Joseph Banks Conservatory, whisby Nature Reserve and Hartsholme Country Park.
