Overview of Kidderminster
The town of Kidderminster is located Northwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 118 miles that would take around 2 hours 10 minutes by taxi via the M40 and A456. It is situated in the Wyre Forest district of Worcestershire and has a population of 55,182 according to the 2001 Census. Nearest towns are Birmingham, Worcester and Warwick.
The town began as a large manor held by William I with a further 16 outlying settlements. Before it was eventually named Kidderminster it was known over the ages as Chedeminstre, Kedeleministre or Kideministre. It was famous for its Carpet manufacturing industry which played an important role in the towns economy and it is still a significant employer in the area today. It is also known for being the birthplace of Rowland Hill, the inventor of the Penny Post.
Places of interest in Kidderminster are Caldwell Castle, the single surviving tower of a large 15th Century Castle, Worcestershire County Museum and The Rose Theatre. For a day out the beautiful setting of Bodenham Arboretum will provide a tranquil setting for nature spotting and walking and Harvington Hall is a moated medieval and Elizabethan Manor House with visitor centre, shop and restaurant. The town itself has three shopping centres, retail park, pubs, restaurants and cafes. The Staffordshire and Worcester Canal provides activities for boaters, walkers and cyclists.
