Overview of Horncastle

The town of Horncastle is located North of Heathrow airport a distance of 150 miles that would take around 2 hours 55 minutes by taxi via the A1. It is situated in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire and has a population of 6090 according to the 2001 Census. The name is derived from the Saxon version of Hyrnecastre which means 'fortress or camp in the corner'.

During Roman occupation they built a fort between Bain and Waring and the saxons, Danes and Normans came after them making their own modifications. In the 13th century the town was given its market charter and held its famous horse fair which was an international trading event that lasted until the 20th Century. In the 17th Century during the English Civil War, the Battle of Winceby took place 4 miles outside the town that was a victory for parliamentary forces under Cromwell. Today it is a busy market town with friendly atmosphere and has plenty of shops and attractions for visitors and tourists.

Some places to visit while staying in Horncastle are Horncastle Market, St Mary's Church, Bolingbroke Castle, Stockwith Mill and Snipe Dales Country Park. There are plenty of attractive houses and cottages to see in this country town and pubs such as The Kings Head, which is an example of one of the few 'mud and stud' buildings left in the town. There are other peaceful and beautiful villages to visit in the surrounding areas such as Old Bolingbroke, Somersby, Tattershall and Woodhall Spa.
