Overview of Honiton
The town of Honiton is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 145 miles that would take around 2 hours 40 minutes by taxi via the M3 and A303. It is situated in East Devon, close to the River Otter and has a population of 11,822 according to 2009 statistics.
The market town grew up on the Fosse Way, the Roman road that links Exeter to Lincoln and excavations on the surrounding countryside show that it has been inhabited since Neolithic times, it was described in the Domesday book as Honetone which translated meant farm belonging to Huna. Honiton is mostly remembered for its Lacemaking which had been introduced to the town by Flemish immigrant lacemakers during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It became well known as a town specializing in the craft and in 1841 the lacemakers of the town produced the lace worn by Queen Victoria on her wedding dress. Today samples of lace can be seen at the local Allhallows museum also exhibiting pottery and antiques.
The town is a wonderful place to stay as a base for exploring the Devon Countryside and neighbouring villages. Honiton borders the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty to the South and Blackdown Hills to the North and East so there is plenty of places for walkers to choose from. In the town itself the Hot Pennies Ceremony is held annually with fair, and a weekly market is held once a week aswell as a busy high street with a wide selection of retailers, cafes and antique shops.
