Overview of Greenwich

The town of Greenwich is located East of Heathrow airport a distance of 30 miles that would take around 1 hour via the M4. It is situated in the South of London in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It has a population of 214403 according to the 2001 Census.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Bronze Age as evidence shows barrows that are thought to have originated from this era having been subsequently used by the Saxons later as burial grounds. It was a fishing village up until the times of Henry V and eventually became the site of a Royal Palace called the Palace of Placentia, the birthplace of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Greenwich has an extensive Maritime History from being the landing place of the Romans and a place of defence from anyone attacking London from Europe in later times. It had become a popular resort by the 17th Century with many grand houses being built there. Today much can be learned of its history at The National Maritime Museum, Greenwich Royal Observatory and The Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre.

There is alot to see and do whilst staying in Greenwich it is a popular tourist destination and now a World Heritage Site with interesting attractions such as the Royal Naval College, Greenwich Park, Greenwich Market that has been going since the 14th Century, Greenwich Pier which is immediatley adjacent to the Clipper Chip the Cutty Sark and Gypsy Moth IV. There are many Shops, Restaurants and Cafes to choose from and is only 20 minutes from Central London.
