Overview of Ely
Ely is a Cathedral city located Northeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 90 that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M25 and M1. It is located in Cambridgeshire only 14 miles from Cambridge and has a population of 15,102 according to the 2001 census.
An Abbey was founded in AD 673 and was developed and destroyed until it was made into a Cathedral in 1083 and restored again between 1845-1870 after the reformation. In ancient times the site which is situated on a Kimmeridge clay island was surrounded by water and activites such as willow, sedge and peat harvesting were important along with eel fishing, where the towns name is derived from. The stunning sixteenth century house of St Mary's Vicarage is where Oliver Cromwell lived in Ely from 1636 to 1646 and the property is now used as the Oliver Cromwell House Museum and tourist information centre.
The city is situated on the River Great Ouse which is popular for boating and has a large marina. There are a number of annual events such as The Eel Day Carnival procession, The Ely Folk Festival, and Great Autumn Show all being traditional events that have take place for many years. Places to visit would be the cathedral known as the 'Ship of the Fens' famous for its Octagon tower and has a stained glass museum. The waterside area has many cafes, shops and restaurants. Just outside of the town are attractions such as Wicken Fen, Welney Wetland Centre, Burwell Museum and The Farmland Museum at Denny Abbey.
