Overview of Eastbourne

The town of Eastbourne is located South of Heathrow airport in East Sussex a distance of 91 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M25 and M23. It is in between Brighton and Hastings and its nearest neighbouring towns are Bexhill and Lewes, it has a population of 97,000 according to 2010 statistics. Its name is derived from the 'Burne' stream that ran through the old town all that remains of the stream is a small pond in Motcombe Gardens.

The history of the town can be traced back to the Roman times and remains of a Roman Bath and Villa have been found in the town and pier. With a visit from Edward II in the middle ages the town increased in popularity and when in 1780 King George III's children visited for a holiday it helped to establish the town as a resort. Over the ages it has been owned by prestigious families such as the Burton, Gilbert and Cavendish families. Strong defences were built during the Napoleonic wars called the Wish Tower and the Redoubt. In 1940 the towns population fell as this part of the South coast was considered an Invasion Zone and by the end of the conflict it was knows as 'the most raided town in the South East region'. Today it is known as 'the sunniest place in Britain' and is a popular place for holiday makers, tourism, international students and elderly residents that wish to retire by the coast.

The town has plenty on offer for entertainment with its pier, bandstand and seafront lined with Victorian Hotels. There are amusements arcades, leisure centres, water sports facilities including scuba diving and water skiing. There are also events held at the pier and seafront including 'Airbourne' now the worlds biggest seafront air show with displays by the Red Arrows. There are four theatres to choose from, the Congress Theatre, Devonshire Park Theatre, Wintergarden Theatre and Royal Hippodrome Theatre. The town centre has a lot to offer in the way of shopping with narrow street with small shops and Arndale shopping centre. There are many pubs, restuarants, open spaces and parks all in easy reach from the town centre.
