Overview of Dover
The town of Dover is located Southeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 105 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M25, M26 and M20. It is a town and major ferry port in Kent, neighbouring towns are Fokestone, Ashford and Canterbury. The name is derived from the river that flows through called the River Dour. Its history goes back to the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Ages evidence showing that it has always been used as a point for people arriving and leaving Britain. It has a population of 28,156 according to the 2001 Census.
Being in close proximity to France it has always been of strategic importance in Britain, with the Romans having built forts and lighthouses above the port, and it later served as a bastion during the napoleonic wars and world war II. When the Railway came to Dover the town underwent large changes and the harbour was redeveloped, industries expanded and the population increased by 600%. Today the town is known for the White Cliffs of Dover a well recognised feature of the area, many of the towns historic buildings were removed when the town was modernised after the war but the places of interest that do remain are Crabble Corn Mill, Dover Castle, Maison Dieu and Western Heights that serve as landmarks and popular visitor attractions.
The town is full of interesting places to go for days out including The Roman Painted House museum, Dover Museum, The Pines Garden, North Downs National Trail, Maison Dieu Gardens, Kearnsey Abbey Country Park, Dover Leisure Centre and Dover Transport Museum.
