Overview of Didcot

The town of Didcot is located South of Heathrow airport a distance of 31 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated at the foot of the North Downs in the region of Surrey. As it is only 25 miles from London it is used as a commuter town and has a population of 15658 according to the 2001 Census.

The town was called Dorchinges in the Domesday book and has an interesting history as a small market town situated on the junction of some important roads and tracks such as Stane Street linking London to Chechester and Turnpike Road a route to Brighton and the coast. Over the ages it has been held by William the Conquerer and the Dukes of Norfolk. Before the railways it was a popular stage post for travellers and the famous coachman William Broad used to frequent The Bulls Head in South Street and his picture hangs in Dorking Museum. The towns notable Dorking Fowl used to be a favourite of Queen Victoria's dinner table the breed having 5 claws rather than 4 of other breeds. With the introduction of the railway the town attracted wealthy residents who built large house in and around Dorking and donated Cotmandene and Box Hill which add to the charm of the town that has retained much of its character over the years.

The town has many attractions for visitors such as Dorking Halls Leisure Centre with Theatre, Cinema and Swimming Pools, Deepdene Terrace Woodland, Denbies Wine Estate, Dorking Halls and Oxmore Copse. Notable landmarks are St Mary's Church, Abinger Hammer Village Clock, Ralph Vaughan Williams Statue, Polesden Lacey and The White Horse. There are many pubs and restaurants for evening entertainment and for daytime shoppers St Martin's Walk Shopping Centre has an interesting mixture of clothing, gift and food shops and has a weekly Market.
