Overview of Dartford
The town of Dartford is located East of Heathrow airport a distance of 60 miles that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the M25. It is situated in the Borough of Dartford and is situated in the northwest corner of Kent. Nearest towns are Northfleet, Gravened and Grays and as it is only 16 miles east south-east of central London it is used as a commuter town. It has a population of 85,911 according to the 2001 Census. The name is derived from Darent-Ford due to the town centre being situated in the valley where the River Darent flows.
The town history can be traced back to the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. The Romans took a great interest in the area due to its proximity to London, and they built one of the first roads linking London to the Kent coast passing through Dartford. Evidence from these times were found, a Roman villa, Roman Cemetry, coins and Pottery. After they had left along came the Saxons, Jutes from Jutland and tribes from Frisia. The towns industrial history is mainly to do with Brewing, Lime-burning, Chalk mining and later on Paper manufacturing. The town has another section called Dartford Heath consisting of 314 acres of open space, this is considered an important area due to the artefacts that have been found there and is an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The town is known for the Queen Elizabeth II Bridge and Dartford Tunnel that are the Dartford Crossings over the River Thames.
The town has a pedestrianised high street and two shopping complexes The Orchards Centre and the Priory Centre and nearby is the popular Bluewater Centre. There are a number of medieval buildings to look at along Easthill such as the Old Jolly Miller Restaurant which is circa 1500. Places to visit in and around the town are Central Park, Darent Valley Walk, Beckett Leisure Centre, Copperfields Shopping Arcade, Dartford Borough Museum and Dartford Viewing Point.
