Overview of Chesham
The town of Chesham is located North of Heathrow a distance of 25 miles that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the M40 and A404. It is located in the Chiltern Hills in Buckingham and has a population of 20,357 according to the 2001 Census. It is situated between Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Hemel Hempstead and neighbouring towns are Amersham, Chorleywood and Little Missenden. It is the largest town in the Chiltern District and is surrounded by the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The history of the town dates back to settlers being in the area from 8000BC but records begin from the 10th Century and its name is derived from old english 'Caestreham' meaning 'the river meadow at the pile of stones'. There were many prestigious owners of the town and it was passed from family to family from 13th to 18th Centuries, one of which was the Seymour Family connected with Henry VIII. It was known for being a place known for people breaking from mainstream religion during the 15th Century with Thomas Harding being burnt at the stake for being a Lollard and there being Quakers and Baptists meeting and preaching in the town.
The high street retains much of its market town character, with it being pedestrianised allowing visitors to meander around taking in the attractions of the Market that still takes place with independant shops and more mainstream shops aswell. Visitor attractions include Amersham Museum housed in an original Tudor building, The Elgiva Theatre, Lowndes Park and Chenies Manor House. Neighbouring towns are Amersham, Berkhamstead, Hemel Hempstead and Chenies where you will find plenty to do, such as Whipsnade Zoo, Gaderidge Park, Butterfly World and Amersham Museum.
