Overview of Braintree

The town of Braintree is located Northeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 79 miles that would take around 1.5 hours by taxi via the M25 and M11. The town is in the district of Essex and has a population of 42,394 according to the 2001 Census. Neighbouring towns are Chelmesford, Bishops Stortford and Colchester. The town was called Brantry and Branchetreu in the Domesday book which meant 'town by the river'

The town dates back over 4000 years when it bagan as a small rural village and after the Romans left Britain it later prospered as a market town increasing in size around the 17th Century with inhabitants working the wool and cloth Trade. The Plague nearly halved the population of 2,300 people. In the 19th Century George Courtauld opened a silk mill in the town and with the family generously built up the town developing the economy through manufacturing and supporting the consturction of the public buildings in the town. The establishment of the Railway line added to the prosperity of the town as it still does today with connections into London.

Today the town has a museum at the centre called Braintree District Museum and the historic market that was established in 1199 is still held twice a week. There are many attrative shops in the the town centre aswell as the retail park on the outskirts of the town. Take a visit to the Blake House Craft Centre, Alderford Windmill with most of the original machinery or go to Great Notley Country Park & Flitch Way 100 acres of land to walk and explore. Places to go a little further out from the town are Hedington Castle, Warner Textile Archive, Marks Hall Gardens and Arboretum and Cressing Temple Barns.
