Overview of Aylesbury

The town of Aylesbury is located northwest of Heathrow airport taking around 50 minutes by car to cover the distance of 42 miles. It is the county town of Buckinghamshire and has a population of 69,021 according to the 2001 census. It is neighboured by the countys of Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire and is used as a commuter town into London. The towns economy is supported by 3 major industrial centres and the towns market continues to flourish with low unemployment rates.

The history of the town dates from 4th Century BC with excavations unearthing an Iron Age Hillfort and was a major market town in Anglo-Saxon times.Its connections with Royalty in history range from the Norman Conquest whereby the King took the town to when King Henry VIII declared it as the county town, the Boleyn family owned Aylesbury Manor. Places of historical interest in the town include Aylesbury Grammar School, the Kings Head Inn owned by the National Trust but still an open public house and the Prime Ministers residence Chequers.

Town attractions include the Queens Park Centre having arts, crafts, galleries and theatre, Waddesdon Manor just outside the town is a beautiful 19th century stately home with interior decor, treasure and landscape grounds to explore. Places in surrounding areas include Claydon House, Buckinghamshire Railway Centre and Waddesdon Castle. Take a walk in the Chilterns and take in the views over Aylesbury Vale. The town caters excellently for clyclists being a winner of funding to become one of six Cycling Demonstration Towns in England.
