Overview of Ascot
The town of Ascot 25 miles Southwest of Heathrow Airport that takes approx 25 minutes by car via the M25 and A329. It is situated in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire. Neighbouring towns are Bracknell, Staines and Egham. The town has a population of 11,603 according to the 2001 Census and the town is made up of three areas main Ascot, South Ascot and North Ascot. The name Ascot is Saxon and comes from 'East Cote' it has grown into a commuter town due to its convenient connections to Reading and London.
The town is famously known for its Racecourse, with its notable Race Meeting called Royal Ascot a major event in the British calendar which goes back as far as 1711 where the royal family attend arriving by horse drawn carriage. Along with Construction the racecourse supports much of the towns economy. The town is also known for its Army Cadet Force Unit and private senior schools St.Georges School where Princess Beatrice attended, St Mary's and the prodigious Victuallers' School.
The land that the town is built upon was once the centre of a Bronze Age Cemetry with Round Barrows, much of these were lost over time with only one remaining in the site of the town hospital. The town is known for its Royal influence with infamous Windsor being so nearby, and Queen Anne was the founder of the racetrack in 1711 when she took a liking to the heathlands for hunting and exercising her horses. Things to do for tourists in the town and surrounding areas could include a visit to the historical town of Windsor with its Castle and selection of high street shops and boutiques, the Archeology Centre, The Coral Reef leisure centre in Bracknell and Go Ape the high forest adventure course aswell as Legoland Windsor. The countryside from Windsor to North Ascot is stunning with extensive grounds, english oak trees and rolling hills.
