Overview of Kew

The town of Kew is located South of Stansted Airport a distance of around 47 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the M25 and M11. It is located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in South West London.

The name Kew comes from an old french word Kai meaning a landing place and was recorded in 1327 as Cayho. Being situated on a bend of the River Thames made it a popular place for settlers throughout the ages and was allegedly the location where the Roman Army forded the Thames in 54 BC. The area has always been maintained by Royalty, Henry VIII's friend Henry Norris lived at Kew Farm as did Robert Dudley who was linked to Elizabeth I and Princess Augusta founded the botanic gardens that are now a World Heritage site. There were also a number of artists associated with Kew and during Georgian times Thomas Gainsborough and John Zoffany were visitors of George III and Queen Charlotte.

Today Kew attracts many visitors and is a popular residential area offering open spaces, market, shops, restaurants and cafes. Some popular attractions include Kew Green, Kew Pond, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Palace, The Barn Church, and Kew Towpath.
