Overview of Huntingdon
The town of Huntingdon is located North of Stansted Airport a distance of around 47 miles a journey that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the M11. It is located in Cambridgeshire and has a population of 19,830 according to the 2001 Census.
Founded by the Anglo-Saxons and Danes it had strategic importance being located at a ford over the Great Ouse, it seems that it was a staging post for Danish raids outside of east Anglia until 917. Edward the Elder took the town in 921 and may have been the first ruler to build a bridge which enabled control and reinforcement of the town. It was the birth place of Oliver Cromwell in 1599 and he was elected to represent the borough in Parliament in 1628. Charles I led an army of 4000 to take the town in August 24 1645, Samuel Pepys was educated at the local grammar school and remained fond of the town for most of his life. During the 18th Century Huntingdon was a busy coaching town and Dick Turpin was a regular visitor to The George coaching inn located on the Great North Road.
There are a number of attractions in the town including Huntingdon Racecourse, Portholme Meadow, Hinchingbrooke House and The Cromwell Museum. Nearby towns include the market town of St Ives, Brampton, Peterborough and Cambridge.
