Overview of Hornchurch

The town of Hornchurch is located South of Stansted Airport a distance of around 33 miles a journey that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the B1256. It is located in northeast London and is part of the London Borough of Havering and has a population of 25,596 according to 2011 statistics.

The town was named after a church that was called the Horned Church in the 13th Century and by the Tudor times it had grown into a large village with a population of nearly 800 people. Farming was the main industry along with leather, tanning and shoemaking and by law all men had to practice archery at the Butts, known today as Butt Green. It was used as a retreat during the 18th Century by people wanting to escape from the crowded streets of London and stagecoaches passed through to town to the city. With the arrival of the railway in the early 1900s property development was boosted and new housing estates were built during this time.

Things to do in Hornchurch include Hornchurch Country Park, Queens Theatre, Hornchurch Sports Centre. The High Street has a number of shops, pubs and restaurants and has good transports links into the neighbouring town of Romford and the City of London.
