Overview of Hillingdon

The London Borough of Hillingdon is located Northwest of Gatwick airport a distance of 50 miles that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the M25. It is the westernmost borough in Greater London and has a population of 275,500 according to 2011 statistics.

The borough is comprised of 17 districts including Cowley, Cranford, Eastcote, Harefield, Hayes, Ickenham, Northwood, Ruislip, Uxbridge, West Drayton and Yeading. It was formed in 1965 from the Municipal Borough of Uxbridge, Hayes and Harlington Urban District, Ruislip-Northwood Urban District and Yiewsley and West Drayton Urban District of Middlesex. In the Doomsday Book of 1086 the area was recorded as a collection of rural communities and this developed into the more densely populated area that it is today with the more industrial units to the south and residential suburban areas in the north. Much of the residential areas were expanded in the early 1900s to make way for better Railway connections. The borough also boasts part of Britain's vast canal network, many of which were repaired and improved under the Waterways Act in the 1940's, making it the perfect place for a relaxing narrow-boat ride.

The borough is home to a number of corporations with British Airways headquarters at Waterside, Harmondsworth, Cadburys Plc in Uxbridge and British Midland International in West Drayton.
