Overview of Harwich

The town of Harwich is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 104 miles that would take around 1hour 51 minutes by taxi via the M25, A12 and A120. It is situated in Essex and has a population of 15,500 according to the 2001 Census. It is one of the Haven Ports on the coast of Essex and its name means 'Military Settlement' from Old English 'here-wic'.

The towns history is recorded to have begun in 1150 when it became a thriving Port, largely due to its position protruding into the Estuary of the Rivers Orwell and Stour and was the only safe anchorage between the Thames and the Humber. It was the target of an attack by William of Orange in 1688 but was prevented by strong winds which turned them away into the English Channel towards Torbay. Today the town is a conservation area due to its historical buildings, notable buildings include the sailmakers house on Kings Head Street circa 1600, the parish church of St Nicholas of 1821 and the Guildhall of 1769. Other places of interest include the High Lighthouse, Treadwheel Crane and the Electric Palace Cinema.

The town has much to do for the visitor or tourist, such as the Halfpenny Pier Visitor Centre for boat trips and more, Harwich Lifeboat Museum and the Redoubt Fort dating from the Napoleonic era. There is a small beach and many places to take a stroll, there are plenty of restaurants, pubs, cafes, antique art and book stores.
