Overview of Harrogate
Harrogate is a city in North Yorkshire and is 12 miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, the journey normally takes about 20 minutes in normal traffic conditions. Harrogate has a population of 151336 according to the 2001 census. It is a Victorian Spa town and at one time one of the largest in Europe. Situated by the Yorkshire Dales an designated area of natural outstanding beauty Harrogate has alot to offer visitors.
The Harrogate district is a large area of villages, Historic buildings and beautiful countryside of hills and lakes for outdoor enthusiasts. The town itself has many attractions and things to do, such as the Pump Room Museum, Bettys Tearooms, Mercer Art Gallery and Harlow Carr Botanical Gardens. The town has parks and gardens, impressive georgian architecutre and vast area of open parkland known as The Stray in the town centre.
Other attractions include the Turkish Baths in the Royal Baths Assembly Rooms, Valley Gardens, and Montpelier Gardens. There are a host of independant and high street shops aswell as two Shopping Centres. The Victoria Shopping centre is a central shopping amenity and the Montpelier Quarter is famous for its Anituques shops, retail shops, pavement cafes and restaurants. It is also close to all the town attractions making it an ideal place to start for a day out. Famous visitors include Agatha Christie, Lord Byron and Lord Tennyson, Mother Shipton the famous witch originated from Knaresborough nearby.
Surrounding towns of interest would be the historic town of Knaresborough, or one of many places of natural interest on one of many recommended walks in places like Ilkley Moor, Nidderdale, Otley Chevin and Harewood among many others.
