Overview of Harpenden

The town of Harpenden is located West of Stansted Airport a distance of around 38 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the A120, A414 and A1. It is located in Hertfordshire and has a population of 29,881 according to the 2001 Census.

The towns history can be traced back to before the Romans when Belgic farmers inhabited the land. Up until the 13th Century the area consisted of woodland, small hamlets and farmsteads. Edward the Confessor had granted Westminster Abbey the manor of Wheathampstead in 1060 and Harpenden village being within its boundaries. The area is home to 'Nomansland Common' where the Second Battle of St Albans was fought, the first annually contested steeplechase in England was held and a favourite haunt of the highwaywoman known as Lady Katherine Ferrers. The town was well known for its straw-weaving industry and was also one of the rural towns used to evacuate children from London in the Second World War.

As a busy commuter town it has good connections into London and is in close proximity to the neighbouring towns of Luton and St Albans. There is plenty on offer for visitors including a busy town centre which retains many of its 17th and 18th Century buildings, shops, pubs and restaurants. Some other attractions include Harpenden Common and the Railway Museum.
