Overview of Haringey

The London Borough of Haringey is located North of Gatwick Airport a distance of around 52 miles a journey that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M23 and M25. It is situated in Northern London and shares borders with six other london boroughs Enfield, Waltham Forest, Hackney, Islington, Camden, and Barnet. It has a population of 255,500 according to 2011 statistics.

The name originates from a personal name of a saxon chief called Haering and Haering's Hege meant Haerings enclosure which developed over the ages into the modern name Haringey. Its history can be traced back to the Ice Age when it was situated at the edge of a huge glacial mass, the Celtic Tribe of Trinobantes inhabited the area and the Romans occupied it leaving roads such as Tottenham High Road aswell as artefacts that suggest their presence before the Saxons arrived in the 5th Century. It remained a rural area until the 18th Century when it became urbanised due to Haringey being an ideal location for large country houses to be built conveniently located to London.

Some neighbourhoods that form the borough include Crouch End, Harringay, Highgate, Muswell Hill, Seven Sisters, Stroud Green, Tottenham Green, White Hart Lane and Woodside. Some popular landmarks include Alexandra Palace, Bruce Castle, Jacksons Lane, Highpoint I and II and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. There is over 60 Hectares of land designated as part of the Metropolitan Green Belt within the borough and is home to five ancient woodlands, Highgate Woods, Queens Wood, Coldfall Wood, Bluebell Wood and North Wood.
