Guildford is situated 55 miles South of London Luton Airport. This journey normally takes about 1.5 hours.
Guildford appears in Domesday Book of 1086 as Geldeford and Gildeford. William the Comqueror laid claim to it. It is thought thAt its name refers to the sandy colour of its rocks, but this is contested. William the Conqueror built Guildford Castle as a stronghold on the River Wey, as a deterant against further invasions. Later the Castle was used as a hunting lodge, from where the Kings would hunt deer and boar in Windsor Great park.Guildford also has a Cathedral, which was consecrated in 1961. Due to its links to the south and west, Guildford grew prosperous through trade!
guildford was a meeting of the ways where travellers would stop over on their way to London. Guildford is now a thriving town with many big name brands setting up businesses there, including: Mitsubishi and Vodaphone. Guildford also has many excellent music shops and cafes.
Fascinating Facts
In 1598, a court case referred to a sport called kreckett being played at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford. This presumably refers to the modern sport of Cricket. This is apparently the first instace of the sport being recorded.
Lewis Carrol lived for a time in Guildford (Alice in Wonderland author).
