Overview of Greenock

Many believe that the original village of Greenock was built up around the Chapel St. Lawrence as traces of this chapel which was situated at the west corner of Virginia Street remained until 1760. The religious establishment gave its name to the Bay of St. Lawrence. The population has risen over the years and in 1992 was estimated to be 57,643. Greenock is found on the south bank of the natural deepwater channel in the River Clyde about 22 miles from Glasgow. Because of it situation the town evolved to provide a major world port on Scotland's west coast, the number of harbours in the town only highlighted this importance.

Building ships used to be very important in Greenock so in 1764 a man called Peter Love built the first square-rigged vessel which was named appropriately the "Greenock". Considerable development took place in the years 1875 to 1914 in the ship building industry however this was greatly affected by depression after the first world war. The development of the town also owes a lot to the Shaw family who have a long connection with Greenock. They were located on the site of Well Park at the Castle of "Wester Greenock". The steep north facing slopes that nearly the entire town lies on gives amazing views across the Firth of Clyde to the mountains beyond.

In the town and surrounding area a wide range of manufacturing companies had been established by the early 1880s. These included woollen factories, sail-making establishments, rope works, sail cloth factories, a flax mill and a paper mill. Also grainmills, a pottery, sawmills, a straw hat manufacturer, a distillery, a large copper work, breweries, soap and candle works, and chemical works. The promotion of commerce and industry was everything to the people of Greenock that it seems that science and literature suffered.

You will find many buildings of architectural interest in the town these include the Custom House, Municipal Buildings, Watt Monument Library, Sheriff Court, mansions of the west end and a large number of impressive churches. One of the best buildings would be the Greenock Town Hall and its 245ft high Victoria Tower. With the building of the present town centre in the 60s and 70s the town has gained a modern image but links of the past have not been forgotten. More recently the "Waterfront" development has given the town a sports and leisure complex and attracted new shopping outlets. There are Conservation Areas at the residential west end and in the area of William Street and Cathcart Square.

Greenock has changed considerably over the years and its importance as a seaport has declined. Shipbuilding and manufacturing has made way for the new industries of computers and electronics. Greenock has contributed a great deal in the history of the nation during peace and war.
