Overview of Gravesend

The town of Gravesend is located North East of Gatwick airport a distance of 39 miles that would take around 43 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A2. It is situated in Kent on the South bank of the River Thames and it the administrative town of the Borough of Gravesham. Its name is derived from 'graaf-ham' the home of the Reeve, many of the locals believe it got its name from the time of the Plague when many bodies from London were buried in the town. It has a population of 56,000 according to 2005 statistics.

History of the town can be traced back to the Stone age and evidence has been unearthed dating back to the Iron Age. Archeological remains of a riverside fort were found from the days of Henry VIII and today the site is a museum run by the Gravesend Local History Society. In the old days journeys to Gravesend were hazardous due to the highwaymen that would frequent Blackheath with a more prefered mode of transport being the 'long ferry' that operated between London and the town. Today the town is a busy shopping centre with a market that operates six days a week and due to being on the Thames Gateway it is an attractive place for commuters to live.

There are a number of interesting landmarks such as Gravesend Town Pier which is the oldest surviving cast iron pier built in 1834, Gravesend Clocktower that was dedicated to Queen Victoria to mark the 50th year of her reign. Others include The Statue of Pocahontas in St Georges churchyard which was a gift from the Govenor of Virginia to the British people and Windmill Hill which was a popular visitor attraction in Victorian times due to the Camera Obscura and extensive veiws across the Thames. It is an ideal base to visit the beautiful Kent countryside, country parks, local villages, pubs and restaurants. Charles Dickens was associated with the town through his life and mentioned it in two of his novels, today there is a Charles Dickens visitor centre at Gad's Hill Place to learn all about the famous Author.
