Overview of Doncaster

The town of Doncaster is located North of Stansted airport a distance of 145 miles that would take around 2 hours and 30 minutes by taxi via the M11 and A1. It is located in South Yorkshire and has a population of 302,402 according to the 2011 Census.

The history of Doncaster can be traced back to Roman times when it began as a Roman Fort which was founded by the River Don, they also built the Roman Road called Ermine Street that ran from London to York. The settlement was known to be home of the Roman Crispinian horse garrison and the town has connections with horses to this day. In the early 12th Century the town became a posession of the Kingdom of Scotland as part of a peace treaty. It gradually became a busier town during the 13th Century but had a setback when much of it was destroyed by fire. In the late 18th century it became an Industrial centre due to its natural resources of deep seam coal.

There are many places of historic and cultural interest in Doncaster, including Conisbrough Castle, The Regimental Museum, Doncaster Museum and Art Gallery which exhibits a Roman shield, the Rossington Dagger and the Latin inscribed Doncaster Altar. Other attractions include The Frenchgate Shopping Centre, Doncaster Racecourse and Potteric Carr Nature Reserve which is an ideal place to go for nature walks and bird watching.
