Overview of Croydon
The London Borough of Croydon is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 18 miles that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the M23. It is situated within the London Borough of Croydon and is 9.5 miles South of Charing Cross. It has a population of 342700 according to 2005 statistics.
The name 'Croydon' comes from the Saxon word 'Croindone' thought to come from the Saxon word for Crocus indicating that the area could have been once a centre for the growth of Saffron. By population it is the largest borough in London and it has applied for city status 3 times but without success, Croydon hopes that its future regeneration will enable it to be named London's Third city alongside the City of London and the City of Westminster. The borough has a long history with a strong economy that was helped by the former existance of Croydon Airport before its closure in 1959. It enabled the expansion of business and finance and is recognised today as a major metropolitan Centre.
Croydon has alot to offer as an arts and entertainment centre having the Warehouse Theatre and Fairfield Halls music recording centre and concert hall. It has its own TV Station called 'Croydon TV' and is the home to the famous BRIT School that has produced many up and coming music artists such as Leona Lewis and Adele.
