Overview of Chester
Chester is situated 187 miles north west of Heathrow airport, this journey in normal traffic conditions will take about 3 hours and 30 minutes on the M40, M6, M54 and the A41. Chester is the county town of Cheshire. It is situated on the River Dee, near to the Welsh boarder. In the census taken in 2001 Chester was found to have a population of 77,040 residents. Chester was approved city status in 1541.
Industrial history
Chester played a major role in the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th century. This began in the North-West of England. Chester had a sizable cattle market, alongside Newtown. The two Chester railway stations Chester General and Chester Northgate Station connected Chester to Newtown and Hoole which meant the railways were accountable for transporting the workers into the city. Chester s wealth then grew significantly during this period.
A substantial amount of land in Chester is owned by the Duke of Westminster. He owns the Eaton Hall estate which is situated near the village of Eccleston. Grosvenor is the Duke's family name. He has many famous features named after him such as Grosvenor Bridge, the Grosvenor Hotel, and Grosvenor Park.
Road Networks
The city of Chester is surrounded by two major roads the M53 and M56. The M53 connects Chester to the Wirral Peninsula and Liverpool and the M56 provides Chester with direct access to Manchester Airport. The other major Roads consist of the A55 this runs along the coast of North Wales towards Holyhead, and the A483 links the road to Wrexham and Swansea.

The Walls
The most remarkable landmark in the city is the city walls, the rows and the black-and-white architecture. The walls enclose the boundary of the medieval city and they are the most complete city walls in Britain. The full circuit of the walls is nearly 2 miles. There is only one break in the circuit; this is in the southwest section in front of County Hall.
The Shropshire Union Canal
The towpath along the Shropshire Union Canal between Waverton and Ellesmere Port provides visitors with 15 miles of walking and cycling. There are many stopping points located at the sides of the canal where visitors can sit and have picnics or just sit quietly and enjoy nature. There are also canal side pubs which may also appeal to visitors. Other Visiting attractions include the Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port.
