Overview of Chertsey

The town of Chertsey is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 32 miles that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A317. Chertsey is situated in the county of Surrey and sits on the River Bourne, which is a tributary of the River Thames.

Chertsey is one of the oldest towns in England, which originally grew around Chertsey Abbey, founded in 666 A.D by Eorcenwald, Bishop of London. It appears in the Domesday Book as Certesi. The Abbey grew to become one of the largest Benedictine abbeys in England, until it was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. The King took stone from the Abbey to construct his palace at Oatlands Palace; the villagers also used stone for raising the streets. By the late 17th century, only some outer walls of the Abbey remained. Today the history of the abbey is reflected in local place names and the surviving former fishponds that fill with water after heavy rain. The nearby Hardwick Court Farm, now much reduced in size and cut off from the town by the M25, retains the abbey's impressive 15th century tithe barn. Due to its location Chertsey is typical commuter town, with great access to the M25 and frequent rail links into London as well as access to the South West Main Line.

Chertsey has many historical landmarks, such as Chertsey Bridge which was built in 1785 by James Paine, a favoured archictect of the powerful Catholic families of the time, the 13th Century Church of St Peters along with many Grade II listed properties, such as Curfew House, Pyrcroft House and Bournewood House. A more modern day attraction within the Chertsey area is Thorpe Park, featuring many extreme roller coasters and adrenaline pumping rides.
