Overview of Cambridge

The City of Cambridge is located North of Stansted airport a distance of 31 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M11. It is located in East Anglia on the River Cam and it estimated popultion was 130,000 according to 2010 statistics.

Settlements have existed around the Cambridge area since before the Roman Empire with the earliest evidence being from a 3,500-year-old farmstead. Under Viking rule it was an important trading centre and the Romans established Farmsteads and a village in the Cambridge district of Newnham. When the Saxons arrived they established themselves on and around Castle Hill naming it Grantabrycge which meant 'Bridge over the River Granta' this gradually evolved into Cambridge and the River Granta into the River Cam. The town played an important role in the English Civil war with many troops being garrisoned at the towns castle by Oliver Cromwell. with the arrival of the Railway in 1845 industries developed and the housing and population increased, in 1951 it was granted its city charter due to its history, administrative importance and economic success.

There are many tourist attractions and places of historical and cultural interest in the city. The most prominent would be the University of Cambridge that dates back to the 12th century when several religious orders had settled in the city and attracted sufficient numbers of students as a seat of learning. Other famous attractions include The Fitzwilliam Museum, The Cambridge and County Folk Museum, Wipple Museum of the History of Science, the Museum of Classical Archaeology, The Round Church, University Botanic Gardens and much more. The market square has many shops, major stores, bookshops, cafes and restaurants.
