Overview of Bradford
Bradford is a city and county in West Yorkshire and is 8 miles from Leeds Bradford Airport, the journey normally takes about 20 minutes in normal traffic conditions. Bradford has a population of 467665 according to the 2001 census. It was first called 'Broad Ford' over time becoming 'Bradford' and is famous for the wool trade, the Bronte family and Sir Titus Salt creator of the village 'Saltaire'. There is alot to do in Bradford such as the Bronte Parsonage Museum, former home of the Bronte sisters, The National Media Museum of film, photography, TV, radio and the web. Cliffcastle Hall Museum is a good day out for families with interesting exhibitions or Lister Park has activites for children, Boating, Botanical garden and Multi Games Area.
Stunning buildings include Bradford Town Hall built in Mid Victorian times, Bradford Cathedral with its ornate stain glassed windows, St George's Hall and Bolling Hall. For entertainment there is the local landmark of the Alhambra Theatre with its prominent exterior holding popular productions. Visit the area known as Little Germany where the buildings date from the 19th Century used as Mills by merchants from Germany. The city has alot to offer for shoppers with the well known high street chains and independant retailers and weekly markets.
Situated on the edge of the Penines there are beautiful places to walk in Bronte Country and areas to go walking such as Ilkley Moor where you can find the Swastika Stone, one of the carved pre historic stones found there. Top Withens near Haworth is the ruins of a farmhouse said to have been of inspiration for the novel 'Wuthering Heights'. Walks on Baildon Moor will give you stunning views across to Aire Valley and Rombald's Moor has a stone circle called Soldier's Trench dating from the Bronze age.
