Overview of Bracknell

The town of Bracknell is located Southwest of Stansted airport a distance of 85 miles that would take around 1 hour 30 minutes by taxi via the M11, M25 and M4. It is situated in the Borough of Bracknell Forest in Berkshire and has a population of 50,131 according to 2001 statistics.

The history of the town can be traced back through the ages with a Bronze Age round barrow at Bill Hill and Ceasars Camp an Iron-Age Hill fort. The town was first recorded in a Winkfield Boundary Charter of AD 942 as Braccan heal which probably meant that it was land belonging to Bracca. Easthampton Park was a Royal Hunting Lodge in the days of Henry VIII, and the place where Catherine of Aragon was banished until her divorce was finalised. The town remained as a small village until after World War II and in 1949 it was designated a new town undergoing new planning and attracting new industries to the area.

There are many places of interest in Bracknell with historic timber-framed pubs such as the 'Old Manor' public House, the Red Lion and the Bull, St Michael and St Mary Magdalene parish church and South Hill Park which is a 1760s mansion that houses an Arts Centre and the Wilde Theatre, named after Oscar Wilde. Other town attractions include The Look Out Discovery Centre, Crowthorne Woods and Swinley Woods.
