Basingstoke is often thought of to be a new town. However, the original settlement dates back to the Doomsday book where it is recorded as being a market town. It lies on the natural trade route from the ports in the South and West to London. Goods and cargos from the new world and the continent passed through the town on their way to the capital and this attracted tradespeople and merchants to the town. In recent years Basingstoke has been rejuvinated after it was entered into the 2003 and 2004 publication, Crap Towns, and subsequently Crap Towns 2. The center has been renovated to have modern shopping facilities, industry and even cycle paths have been added to make the place greener. It is now a thriving hub of business and enterprise. Its population is approximately 80,477.
Basinstoke still acts as a juntion for travellers coming to and from London. It has junctions with the M3 at Jct 6 and Jct 7. It also links to other major routes such as Winchester and Reading. Its industries include; I.T, Communications and insurence.
