Overview of Amersham

The town of Amersham is located West of Stansted airport at a distance of 55 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the M25. It is a market town in Buckinghamshire and has a population of 17,719 according to the 2001 Census.

The origins of the town date back to Anglo-Saxon times when Amersham was called Agmodesham. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Elmodesham and listed as having 6 manors one belonging to the wife of Edward the Confessor. During the Reformation in 1521 seven Lollard dissenters were burnt at the stake and a memorial called Martyrs Memorial is situated on the hill above the town commemorating this event. The town is split into two consisting of the old and new towns, known as Amersham Old town, a historic market town and Amersham-on-the-Hill.

The old town is characterised by half timbered buildings, quaint cottages and a busy high street. It has a range of designer and craft shops, a market hall dating back to 1682, Amersham Museum and St. Marys Parish Church and the Memorial Gardens. Amersham-On-The-Hill is the modernised area also known as Top Amersham by locals and has the main shopping centre, library and Chiltern Pools. The town is located in the Chiltern Hills a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is also part of the Commuter Belt so it has convenient connections into London.
