Overview of Banchory
The rural town of Banchory lies West of Aberdeen Airport a distance of around 20 miles in the region of Aberdeenshire where the River Feugh meets the River Dee. The town is well known as the Gateway to the Royal Deeside. According to the 2001 Census it has a population of 6,034 inhabitants. Anyone visiting the town would be able to take advantage of its location which makes it an ideal base to explore the mountain ranges, countryside, historical attractions and amazing coastline.
Fishing is one of many main attractions with the famous Raemoir Trout Fishery for the active angler, or you might like to stand on the The Bridge of Feugh and watch the salmon leap up the rapids. The Falls of Feugh as they are known are a popular tourist attraction with restaurant and tea rooms nearby it makes an excellent day out. Other pursuits that visitors can partake in while in Banchory include Golf, Walking, moutain Biking, River Canoeing, horse riding and Sight Seeing. With the breathtaking moutain ranges, heritage trails and historical sites there is much on offer, a stop at either Crathes or Drum Castwill will let you step back in time of medieval life and marvel at the views from its towers. To sample the age old scottish tradition of Whiskey making a stop at the Lochnagar Distillery would have to be on your to-do list whilst sneaking a peek nextdoor at Balmoral Castle royal holiday residence and beloved 2nd home to Victoria and Albert.
The name Banchory actually means 'Blessed Place' in scottish gaelic. It is of early christian heritage with two Christian cross-slabs still existing as relics of its past. The local landmark of Scolty Hill is a tall tower that was a dedication for General Burnett who fought alongside Wellington, the museum also has information related to the famous composer and musician James Scott Skinner who was born in Banchory.
The town holds the Banchory Show held every July in King George V Park, which features a Dog show, agricultural show, Craft Fair, Highland Dancing and a race called the Scolty Hill race in honour of the towns landmark. The town has ample places to eat out, with restaurants, tea rooms, shops and hotels in this picturesque village.
