Overview of Ballater
The town of Ballater lies East of Aberdeen Airport a distance of around 42 miles in a region between Angus and Aberdeenshire on the River Dee. According to the 2001 Census it has a population of 1,446 inhabitants. Another town popular with tourists of varying interests from Hikers of all levels keen to trek the Cairngorm mountains directly to the east, to bikers and walkers of the countryside wishing to sample the infamous Spring water thought to cure Scrofula in times gone by. The towns Royal connections go back to the days of Queen Victoria to recent times of Balmoral Castle the royal holiday residence only 10 minutes away by car. In commemoration to past and present royal affiliations the town holds Victoria Week held every August with its much renouned Highland Games involving piping, dancing, track and field events held on a beautiful spot just outside of the village. It is a whole week of parades, concerts, music, competitions and events for all ages to take part in.
Not only are the Cairngorm mountains a tourist attraction on a grand scale helping to attract the estimated 1000 visitors a year, other walking adventures include Craigendarroch a smaller hill above the town, Lock Muick and Lochnagar. An ideal time to go to the town for walking pursuits would be in May when the Ballater Walking Festival takes place where participants are offered guidance through the Cairngorms and other hills and valleys. Why not take advantage of the snowsport services at times of good snow cover when you can hire ski's and snowboards.
Although much of the town reflects its development during the Victorian times, surrounding area 'Muir of Dinnet' tells a much older story with its wealth of archeological remains from over 2000 years ago, towns such as Tullich and Crathie would tell of tales that go as far back as the early Christian Saints. The founder of Ballater is known to be Francis Farquharson and much of the towns establishment can be owed to the energy that he put into it around 1790 whose family owned much of the surrounding land of Royal Deeside.
The town has a modern school - Ballater School with the old building more recently being used as a Environmental Education Centre for the community. Famous connections include Lord Byron who was inspired by the mountains and landscapes who included them in his poem 'Darl Lochnagar' and Sir Patrick Geddes founder of town planning. Places not to miss when visiting the town would be Spittal of Glen Muick visitor centre, Banchory Museum, Royal Lochnagar Distillery, Tomnaverie Stone Circle and Know Castle.
