Barcelona Airport (aka El Prat)

Situated 6.2 miles (10km) South West of Barcelona in the Village of El Prat Barcelona airport is the second largest in Spain, behind Madrid Barajas. In 2008 Barcelona handled 30,208,134 passengers and conducted 321,491 operations.

The airport serves domestic, European and North African destinations. Singapore (now Star Alliance) run flights to Asia, with American Airlines, Continental and Delta all providing links to the Americas.

The airport is a hub for the passenger services Vueling, Span Air, Air Europa and Iberia.

History

In 1948 the first service was chartered by Pan America World Airways to travel to New York City. This was followed by rapid expansion as the pre war tourist industry began to take off and the idea of the package holiday was born.

The control building was created in 1965 and the main terminal was rebuilt in 1968.

The airport underwent massive refurbishment for the 1992 Olympic Games which were held in the city and contributed greatly to the increase in tourists to the area. In 2009 a new south terminal will be opened, which should allow for further expansion and increase in visitors. It is hoped that Barcelona will be able to handle over 55 million visitors a year. The site is expected to be 15.33 square kilometres in total. There are further future plans to build another satellite terminal by 2012, which will increase the airports capabilities to 70 million people.
